Day 4:  Lisbon

Lisbon is a stately city of Neoclassical buildings and wide plazas. Eternally linked to the sea, Lisbon’s magnificent harbour is spanned by the longest suspension bridge in Europe. Other landmarks include the World Heritage Sites of Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery, both built in Lisbon’s native Manueline architectural style.

Under the shadow of Vesuvius, Naples is best known for its cache of medieval and Baroque architecture, and as the birthplace of the pizza. With Pompeii on its doorstep, a labyrinthine World Heritage-listed historic centre, and as many churches as Rome, there’s a lot to see in this city on the Bay of Naples. Sip a glass of Lacryma Christi wine from the slopes of Vesuvius or shop for a handcrafted nativity scene on Via San Gregorio Armeno. Visit the Archaeological Museum, Museo di Capodimonte, Cathedral, Posillipo Terrace or simply order an authentic Margherita pizza at a piazza café.

Haifa city is lined with sandy beaches, crystal waters and is overlooked by the stunning Mount Carmel. Haifa is a city of six faiths living side by side and offers visitors a different face of Israel. Visit the beautiful Baha’I Gardens and walk around luscious greenery cascading down the hillside. At the base of the garden is the German Templar Colony, where you will wander through 19th century mansions, shops and restaurants leading down to the waters.

Port Said is an industrial city that acts as the gateway to the Suez Canal, allowing your passage between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. The city is set right on the Mediterranean and is mainly constructed from golden-hued stone. Keep an eye out for the soaring twin minarets of the mosque and the elegant Italianate architecture, like arches and balconies, as you sail past. In particular, the buildings of the Suez Canal Authority are particular striking and seem to rise from the sea like a Venetian palazzo.

Aqaba is a vibrant, historical city with dusty, sandy hills and stunning white beaches. Aqaba is full of history and natural beauty and is home to Petra, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. This city is 2,200 years old and carved out of the surrounding cliffs. Visit Wadi Rum, an extraordinary desert and mountain region taking you past endless mountains and dunes.

Muscat is one of the Middle East’s oldest cities and is filled with fascinating history, charm and natural beauty. Wandering through Muscat you can enjoy rare glimpses of the rich and opulent cultural heritage of the land. For tourists that come from all over the world, Muscat holds a special charm with its grand forts, parks and museums all of which help to understand the history of Oman.

Sri Lanka conjures up the exotic and the mysterious, and here you could choose from a diverse range of activities, from exploring the temples of the Sinhalese Kingdom or taking a guided tour of an Elephant orphanage. You could also take look at the Pettah Bazaar where you can buy almost anything and everything!

Phuket is Thailand’s largest island and offers a huge range of tours to help you discover the region. Go trekking in Khao Sok National Park, explore Phang Nga Bay’s dazzling limestone scenery by canoe, try snorkelling, or visit Phuket’s rubber and coconut plantations.

Although the miles of golden sandy beaches lure visitors to Penang, take time to ride a trishaw to George Town where you can shop for exquisite batiks and visit the Khoo Wall, with its pillars and roof elaborately decorated with intricate carvings by master craftsmen from China. Visit Kek Lok Si, reputed to be the largest and most beautiful Buddhist temple complex in Southeast Asia.

Day 33: Port Klang

Port Klang is close to the tall skyscrapers and large shopping malls of Kuala Lumpur. This sprawling city is the cultural capital of Malaysia, and mixes many diverse cultures. Go rock climbing at the Batu Caves, see the amazing Petronas twin towers, and marvel at the grand colonial architecture before picking up some great food in the Chinatown district.

Phu My is the gateway to Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City, one of the most bustling and spirited cities in Vietnam. The city offers an abundance of history and culture with museums, palaces and temples. The Ben Thanh Market is a market offering everything from souvenirs to local delicacies and is a day trip in itself.

Day 38: Nha Trang

The Vietnamese seaside resort of Nha Trang is now well on its way to becoming a sophisticated modern town, but you will still find plenty of old fashioned charm. The region surrounding the city is rich in history with one of their most important sacred sites – the Towers of Po Nagar, which dates from the 7th century – lying close to the city.

Diverse and delicious with an insatiable appetite, Hong Kong – also called the ‘City of Life’ – is bursting with energy. Visit the dynamic Stanley Market where shoppers will find an unparalleled selection of bargains and hidden treasures, Victoria Park for spectacular views of the harbour or one of the 9,000 bars, pubs and restaurants Kowloon has to offer

Perched on a lush peninsula at Shute Harbour, Airlie Beach is a popular starting point for trips to the Great Barrier Reef and the Whitsunday Islands. Swim in the man-made lagoon, visit one of the many local pubs or restaurants or for those looking for a little more adventure, why not try the Whitsunday Crocodile Safari.

Brisbane is a lively, cosmopolitan city with beautiful riverside parks, a busy cultural calendar and a vibrant café culture. The river is lined with busy malls, riverfront plazas, outdoor man-made beaches, water parks, botanical gardens and wildlife parks. The vibe here is relaxed with nearby Gold Coast and Surfers Paradise being a top location for watersports and some of Australia’s best beaches.

Stroll the historic Adelaide Central Market, or simply relax beneath a fig tree canopy in the Botanic Gardens.
