Civitavecchia (Rome) is often described as the Eternal City and is filled with breathtaking treasurers of almost every description – The Vatican’s Sistine Chapel, St Peter’s Basilica, the Colosseum, and the Trevi Fountain where a tossed coin promises your return to this city of Romance. Take a walk along the famous (and expensive) Via Veneto which came to fame in the 1960’ as the centre of la dolce vita (the sweet life) attracting jet setters from around the world.
Salerno is often overshadowed by the more well-known and popular Naples that lies to the west of the city however it is a fantastic and beautiful destination. Salerno benefits from its close proximity to the stunning and renowned Amalfi coast, but also its own myriad of beautiful architecture, gorgeous gardens and sun-kissed promenade. Attractions such as Salerno Cathedral and the Forte la Carnale have a huge amount of history and artwork, whilst the historic old town centre provides a wonderful opportunity to explore the city and enjoy this coastal destination.
Sicily is an island blessed with incredible beaches and ancient hilltop villages with views of the infamous Mount Etna. As well as being known for its beaches and active volcano, Sicily has some ancient architecture including the Norman Cattedrale and the Palazzo Reale, a former royal palace. The classical ruins at Tindari and ancient city of Taormina are worth a visit for an insight into Sicily’s history and culture.
Day 4: At Sea
Day 5: Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik is a picture-perfect medieval walled city is filled with ancient stone buildings, narrow cobbled streets and fortified ramparts rising above red-tiled rooftops. Stradun is the city’s focal point and main artery while Dubrovnik’s streets are blessedly free of traffic. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the old city remains the pride of the Republic of Croatia and houses the world’s oldest pharmacy.
Day 6: Kotor
Kotor is a fortified town on Montenegro’s Adriatic coast, in a beautiful bay close to the limestone cliffs of Mt. Lovcen. Winding streets and squares and its medieval old town with several Romanesque churches including the Cathedral of St Typhon. Visit several treasures of Kotor’s rich historical past including the Church of St Luka from the 13th century, the Prince’s Palace from the 17th century and Napoleon’s Theatre.
Day 7: Corfu
Corfu is a lush and sun-drenched island with a long and colourful history – it has been ruled by the Romans, the Venetians, the French and the English. The Town boasts fortresses bearing the insignia of the Venetian Republic, an esplanade lavishly planted by the French during the Napoleonic Wars, and an English cricket pitch.
Day 8: At Sea
Day 9: Corsica
Corsica, the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte. Stroll past the cathedral where the future emperor of France was baptized and take a look at the Casa Bonaparte a museum devoted to the Imperial glory of France. But Corsica is also known as the “scented isle” because of the aromatic bush, le maquis, that covers much of the island and was also the name of the French resistance movement during the German occupation in World War 2.
Day 10: Toulon
Toulon is not at the top of most tourists “must see” lists. Thankfully this allows you to wander crowd free. Take a walk through the cobbled street of its lovely old town surrounded by Mont Faron or gaze across the Mediterranean from the magnificent harbour, built entirely by mother nature. Don’t miss a visit to Aix, the city of a thousand fountains, one of the ‘jewels’ of Provence.
Day 11: Barcelona
Barcelona combines everything that is most charming about Mediterranean cities – a relaxed pace, months of endless sunshine, unbeatable food – with the cultural and design sophistication of almost any city in the northern hemisphere. Its patchwork of architectural styles displays dark, Gothic façades next to the harlequin buildings of the Modernistas and the skyline-piercing constructions of Jean Nouvel or Herzog and de Meuron, and a day spent admiring them can be topped off with a sundowner on one of the city’s seven beaches before dinner at any number of Michelin-starred gastronomic temples or humble, family-run tapas bars.
